Progress of My Memoir Writing (November 2022)
“I heard an angel speak last night, and he said, ‘Write!’” ~ Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Do you wonder about the progress of my memoir writing?
Lately, I have hit several bumpy spots on my journey that have required me to slow down, rest, heal, and nurture my body. Nevertheless, I do my best to stay present and redirect my focus when I need to show up for my dream—to write and publish my memoir.
In case you hear it for the first time, you can read my poetry, “Turning Point,” and explore the challenges I encountered along the writing path with the opportunity to be seen during a documentary interview and the aftereffects of opened wounds. Later, I received clarity about my memoir mission. And now, I continue to show up for my dream even if I stumble.
Milestone:
I celebrate the 83,006 words of my first messy draft. The average memoir is usually between 60,000 and 90,000. However, I aim for 100,000 words because I know lots of material will be cut with an invisible ninja’s sword during the revision process of creating the second, third, and other drafts.
My writing is improving.
- Currently, I am adding stories of my life in NYC to Chapter 4 of my book.
- I have weekly sessions with a writing mentor who helps me to progress in my writer’s life.
- I have an accountability group of published and unpublished memoirists after I took a three-day challenge back in August.
- I meet people on the same journey as me and take memoir-writing workshops.
- I attend a memoir critique group with established guest writers and immigrants that work on their own stories. However, from now on, I decided to focus on writing rather than revising.
- I resumed attending soul writing classes.
- I find time to read books on writing and learn from people’s memoirs.
- My dream to accomplish by the end of this year is to create a reader’s nook so I have a dedicated and comfortable space to read my collection of many years’ worth of books and GET INSPIRED.
Don’t give up on your dreams. Take tiny steps to move forward.
